Travel Tip: Art and Archaeology in England
Hiroshi Sugimoto

Hiroshi Sugimoto
LONDON  •  Serpentine Gallery  •  Ongoing
Japanese-born Hiroshi Sugimoto uses a traditional wooden box camera to render the real world both abstract and infinite. For his first solo exhibition in a public gallery in London, Sugimoto has responded to the space, light and architecture particular to the Serpentine, creating a meditative environment in which to view a selection of photographs from three bodies of work created since 1990.

=Born in 1948 in Tokyo, Sugimoto moved to Los Angeles in 1970 to study photography at the Art Center College of Design, and then to New York in 1974. Today, he works in both Tokyo and New York. Sugimoto began his career at a time when Conceptualism and Minimalism, two significant art movements of the Sixties and Seventies, were at their height – his art world contemporaries included Carl Andre, Donald Judd, Dan Flavin and Robert Irwin – and his photographs are influenced by both movements. Since this time, he has created perfectly balanced, often symmetrical images in which all extraneous details are eliminated. Over a thirty-year career, Sugimoto has consistently worked in series, photographing a limited number of subjects including seascapes, modern architecture, wax figures and cinemas.
