Lee Friedlander: American Musicians
UNITED STATES TOLEDO, OHIO • Toledo Museum of Art • Ongoing |
 |
Lee Friedlander: American Musicians features more than 45 color and black-and-white photographs from the 1950s and early 60s of jazz legends, as well as some lesser-known musicians. "These were very heroic people to me," Friedlander said, "and that's the way I approached them."
After taking up the camera at age 14, Friedlander studied photography at the Art Center in Los Angeles, where his passion for music led him to meet Nesuhi Ertegun, a founder of Atlantic Records. In 1955, when Friedlander moved to New York City to begin his career, he befriended Marvin Israel, art director of Harper's Bazaar and an Atlantic Records designer. Israel soon began incorporating Friedlander's photos of muscians into his cover designs.
Jazz-and photography-related events and activities related to the show include Cool Jazz-Hot Art at the Toledo Museum of Art 13 - 15 February, a weekend of interactive tours, live performances, and workshops.
