For some 70 years, the Basel shipper and art connoisseur Karl Im Obersteg (1883–1969) and later his son Jürg (1914–1983), Professor of Forensic Medicine, collected international art of the 20th century. Although they did not pursue a specific concept, their acquisitions were marked by friendships with artists (especially with Jawlensky) and a preference for expressive figurative painting. Such artists as Cézanne, Kandinsky, Klee, Modigliani, Nolde, Rodin, Rouault, Soutter, Tàpies indicate the scope and significance of this art treasure.
