Travel Pick: Classical Music in Finland Kuhmo Chamber Music Festival
Kuhmo Chamber Music Festival FINLAND KUHMO • Various venues • Ongoing
Haydn’s sixty-nine string quartets, of which only around a dozen are widely known, are without exception brilliantly crafted and original works. These compositions will form the backbone of this year’s 15-day Kuhmo Chamber Music Festival. Kuhmo’s second major theme this year introduces a host of important composers engaged in a dialogue between the Old and the New Worlds. One such individual who worked on both sides of the Atlantic was Italian Luciano Berio, who sadly died in May of last year. Among the many works Berio left behind are the fourteen Sequenzas for solo instruments. These will be heard in morning concerts as a contrast to Haydn’s string quartet output. More than 90 concerts during the festival fortnight.
György and Márta Kurtág have had to cancel their particiption in the festival for reasons of health, and the Hungarian Gabor Csalog will be performing works for piano by Kurtág, Bach and Ligeti instead.
