Copenhagen's renowned museum, the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek, has made its remarkable collection available to the RA while it closes for refurbishment. The collection was built up by a father and his son - Carl and Helge Jacobsen - descendents of the founder of the Danish Brewing company, Carlsberg. The collection ranges from outstanding examples of Greek, Roman and Etruscan sculpture to works by Danish Golden Age artists and by French artists from Millet and Rodin to Monet, Sisley, Degas and Gauguin.
This exhibition will provide a unique opportunity to view some 250 works from the Glyptotek’s rich collections, including rarely seen works by some of the great artists of the Danish Golden Age including Købke, Eckersberg and Lundbye, and examples from the Glyptotek’s world class collections of sculptures by Degas and Rodin, and Gauguin’s paintings and three-dimensional work.
DEGAS SCULPTURES
The Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek is one of only four museums in the world to possess a complete set of Degas bronzes – totalling 72 works. As a complement to the 13 sculptures by Degas loaned to the RA for the exhibition, visitors will be able to view one of Degas’ most famous works Little Dancer, aged 14 Years, generously loaned to the Royal Academy by John Madejski. The sculpture will be on show for the next two years in the John Madejski Fine Rooms.
