About Face: Photographic Portraits from the Collection
UNITED STATES
CHICAGO  •  The Art Institute of Chicago  •  Ongoing

Organized by The Art Institute of Chicago, this exhibition presents several modes of portraiture. In photographs by Rashid Johnson and Alfredo Jaar, for example, hands and a uniform propose individualities as expressive as those usually sought in the face. Portraits by Sally Mann and Nicholas Nixon draw on the intimacy of observed family relations, while those by Loretta Lux, Vik Muniz, and Cindy Sherman toy with traditional beliefs in the photographic likeness. Nan Goldin, Susan Meiselas, and Melissa Ann Pinney suggest that the context of everyday life can reveal the identity of a portrait subject. Finally, such artists as Richard Avedon, Chuck Close, Luis Gonzalez Palma, and Fazal Sheikh consider the face in a seemingly straightforward manner that is as disarming as it is engaging. This eclectic collection of photographs offers an opportunity to consider the photographic portrait anew, as well as the holdings of the collection at The Art Institute of Chicago.
