UltraBaroque: Aspects of Post-Latin American Art
UNITED STATES SAN FRANCISCO • Museum of Modern Art • 18 August 2001 - 2 January 2002 |
|
UltraBaroque focuses on a critical re-reading of the Baroque in Latin America and its use by contemporary artists as an important cultural metaphor. It addresses the problematic history of the baroque, in particular its relationship to the experience and legacy of colonization, and examines the impact of the current globalization of economies, communications and culture on the making of art in this hemisphere. Some seventy-five works by fifteen artists from South America, Mexico, the Caribbean and the United States are on view. The artists included in the exhibition are Miguel Calderon (Mexico), Rochelle Costi (Brazil), Arturo Duclos (Chile), Jose Antonio Hernandez-Diez (Venezuela), Franco Mondini-Ruiz (United States), Ruben Ortiz Torres (Mexico), Nuno Ramos (Brazil) among others.
