The Cool Gaze: Realism in the Twenties
GERMANY MUNICH • Kunsthalle der Hypo-Kulturstiftung • Ongoing |
|
To mark the re-opening of the new Hypo-Kunsthalle, designed by Swiss architects Herzog and de Meuron (London's Tate Modern), curator Wieland Schmied has put together an exhibition devoted exclusively to paintings of the 1920s. With some 180 works on view, the exhibition attempts to demonstrate that the Realism of this period was a world-wide phenomenon. The show features paintings by European and American artists including Picasso, Mirň, De Chirico, Modigliani, Beckmann , Dix, Edward Hopper, Stuart Davis, Georgia O'Keefe and Charles Sheeler. All aspects of Realism - from Neoclassicism through Novecento, Neue Sachlichkeit (New Objectivity) and Magic Realism to precisionism - are examined in the exhibition.
