Centenary of Alberto Giacometti: The Retrospective
SWITZERLAND
ZURICH  •  Kunsthaus Zürich  •  Ongoing

Alberto Giacometti (1901 - 1966), the Swiss sculptor, would have celebrated his 100th birthday on 10 October 2001. He was almost fifty when he created the form of the human figure by which he is best known - tall and inconceivably thin male and female forms. With 90 sculptures, 40 paintings and 40 drawings on display in the Zurich Kunsthaus, the visitor will have not only a representative overview of Giacometti's work, but more specifically of his early African art influenced surrealist phase - works which are rarely displayed because of their fragility. Further insights into the artist's life and work and into the reception of his art are provided by Ernst Scheidegger's photo exhibition in the Graphics Cabinet, an opera featuring texts by Giacometti, lectures, documentaries and the exhibition catalog. The show will travel to the Museum of Modern Art, New York from 10 October 2001 to January 2002.
