The Keith Haring Show

The Keith Haring Show
MILAN  •  La Triennale di Milano  •  Ongoing

Curated by Gianni Mercurio and Julia Gruen, this rather complete retrospective  exhibition of the American artist Keith Haring contains close to one hundred paintings, forty drawings, numerous sculptures and oversized works on paper. In addition, the show includes approximately six hundred documentary photographs, illuminating the context within which his art originated and developed.

Haring’s artistic development took shape in the span of a single decade, from 1980 to 1990. Nevertheless, his frenetic activity resulted in the production of an enormous body of work consisting of the subway drawings, canvases, works on paper, sculptures, objects and commercial merchandise – always characterised by a uniquely personal quality that immediately marked him as one of the great exponents of the period.

From the very beginning Keith Haring dealt with the meaning of death, violence, and sin, of power, religion, and redemption. The theme of sexuality also repeatedly challenged him to create new images.

The confrontation with the immune deficiency disease AIDS, to which he succumbed at the age of 31, is also the theme of many pictures and drawings.
