VENICE  •  Palazzo Grassi  •  Ongoing
With over 250 works on loan from around 90 museums and private collections in Europe and America, this retrospective is the largest show ever devoted to the French realist painter who died on 18 February 2001 at the age of 92. Balthus was self-taught and best known for his paintings from the 1930s and 1940s of adolescent girls. The earliest works on show date back to 1923 and are Studies for self-portrait drawn in pencil on paper, while the most recent, presented to the public for the first time in Venice, is Girl with Mandolin painted in 2000-2001. The exhibition also claims to provide facts and clarifications on Balthus's elusive biography.
