This exhibition, co-organized by the Walker Art Center and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, focuses exclusively on Chuck Close's (b. 1940) self-portraits in all of the media in which he works: painting, drawing, photography, collage, and printmaking. The approximately 100 works on view include a broad array of examples from throughout Close's career, the exhibition provides a fascinating glimpse of an artist's self-examination through time, beginning with his first self-portrait acquired by the Walker in 1969. In fact, the show begins with the year Close moved to New York City and his first large-scale black and white self-portrait – the first of his paintings to enter a museum collection.
