Christopher Campbell

Christopher Campbell : The Day of the Triffids
ENGLAND
LONDON  •  StART SPACE  •  Ongoing

The Day of the Triffids, a solo show by Christopher Campbell, is a series of landscape paintings inspired by an England imagined in John Wyndham’s novel of the same title.

The crux of the story is a very British tragedy. It portrays London as a city that is lost and broken, that alarmingly quickly and easily capitulates to its fate.

When first published, in 1951, it held parallels of political concerns of the time such as the cold war, the fear of biological experimentation and the threat of living in a nuclear age.

The issues raised in the book, combined with current affairs dominated by headlines of 21st century despair give emphasis to this exhibition. Campbell draws from our uneasy times together with the pulp of Wyndham’s paranoia to suggest a London gripped in the aftermath of an event.

In this exhibition, Campbell continues a British tradition of urban realism.

Christopher Campbell was born in 1975 and studied Fine Art at Leeds Metropolitan University. Since his graduation in 1998 he has exhibited in both public and commercial galleries.
