Shaping the Beginning: Modern artists and the ancient eastern Mediterranean
ATHENS  •  Museum of Cycladic Art  •  Ongoing
The exhibition Shaping the Beginning seeks to explore how early forms of art from Egypt, Mesopotamia, the Levant, Crete, the Cyclades and mainland Greece affected the thought and work of important artists such as Brancusi, Matisse, Derain, Picasso, Giacometti, Moore etc. By focusing on major themes (the bull, the spiral, the grid, the labyrinth) as well as typological elements (the material, the simplicity and flatness of form), the exhibition evolves into an intriguing dialogue between the past and the present, with ancient artefacts and modern works of art (sculptures, casts, paintings, drawings, photographs) presented alongside one another.
