Montezuma’s Revenge

At first glance, the works exhibited in Montezuma’s Revenge can be perceived as funny sequences of human recreation, but darker visions of our troubled world and the precarious place of human life seem to underlie this summer narrative. For example: Bill Owens’ photographs of American insouciant suburban leisure of the 70’s give way to Falk Haberkorn and Sven Johne’s photographs of an artificial paradise constructed in Eastern Germany for workers eager to join the capitalist society. Haberkorn’s photographs of endless lines of tourist buses taken in San Marco’s Square in Venice, capture the monotony and tedious pace of organized vacations, while Aaron Young’s portrait of a sunburned dollar sign on the artist’s back reminds us bluntly what contemporary hedonism is about. Bradley Castellanos’ collapsed skylines bring a seductive post nuclear atmosphere, while Micha Laury’s lifesize jellyfish convey a more anxious tone, despite their tactile and luminescent qualities.
